Swan Upping - a 500 year thames tradition
You may have heard people remark, ‘The Queen owns all the swans on the river Thames’, but this, in fact is a common misconception. The Swan Upping Ceremony is an annual census of swans, a 500 year old royal river tradition which involves the Queen’s swan marker, along with representatives of the Companies of Vintners and Dyers, lifting the birds from the Thames individually & marking those which belong to Her Majesty.
